(OLD) NEWS: WebRSH 1.1b is finaly available.

Version 1.1 is a fairly major rewrite of WebRSH. It provides similar functionality to version 1.0.x, but with numerous changes and improvements. For more details, please see the changelog.

What is it? WebRSH is a CGI program which implements a general purpose web-based computing shell. It provides a command line interface, file manager, text editor, and a few other basic things, while being highly configurable and adaptable to various tasks. It can replace, to some extent, rsh, telnet, and ftp daemons. WebRSH is implemented in Perl, and runs on both UNIX and Win32 platforms. It should also be portable to other platforms.

WebRSH is free software distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

WebRSH requires a CGI-compliant web server and a Perl interpreter in order to work. On UNIX/Linux boxes, it should run well with Apache and practically any Perl 5 installation. On Win32 boxes, Microsoft's native servers (IIS/PWS for Windows NT, and "Personal Web Server for Windows 95") are suitable, and it is recommended to use the "Perl for Win32" Perl interpreter from ActiveState.

For more information, you can view the readme file and look at a few snapshots:

Windows client using the Plain Interface: Default response, Command response, File Manager, Text Editor, Help Menu, General Preferences.

Linux client using the Frames Interface: File Manager, Text Editor, Killable Links, Upload Form.

We also have a page with more detailed information concerning what is WebRSH, who might want to use it, its goals and design principles, how it might benefit from your help, and some related links.

WebRSH is currently in beta status, but it is fully functional and should work quite well (at least on Linux and Win32 boxes; it had not yet been tested on anything else). If you would like to try it, you can download the latest version from here:

gziped tar archive: WebRSH 1.1b (127 kb)
zip archive: WebRSH 1.1b (165 kb)

Please note that the content of these two archives is precisely the same. Both contain everything needed to run WebRSH on any of its supported platforms (except for a web server and Perl, that is).

The older version 1.0.1b (which only works on Win32) is also available: WebRSH 1.0.1b (114 kb). However, we recommend using the newer version.
